The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
